Blogs
A blog is a web page for discussing a topic or to get information out to others. Blogs are a great tool for teachers to utilize in their classroom. A blog allows them to communicate with teachers and students, provide information on important issues in the classroom, as well as get feedback from parents. Although blogs are great tool to use, they have to be handled with care in a classroom setting. There are certain laws in affect to insure that is done. These laws are FERPA (family educational rights and privacy act) and CIPA (children’s internet protection act) and they both are in place to keep students safe and their information safe. FERPA makes sure that information about students stays private. You can’t display a child’s first and last name and other personal information on a publicly accessible blog. CIPA prevents students from going to certain websites and doing certain tasks. These laws make sure that teachers get permission from parents or guardians to do things like display a picture of their child or even their child's work.
I love the idea of classroom blog, not only for the students, but for the parents as well. It would be a great place to post standard information that all parents need such as: a class schedule, change of transportation form, field trip forms, and medical forms. It would also be a good idea to display a current calendar of upcoming events, and information about parent volunteers in the classroom. Another idea I am very fond of is posting study material and even extra credit for the students to take part in if they are current on all class work and homework.
